MetaCognitions | Language Hangups

Last evening’s Tamil language podcast listening was productive, and vastly more satisfying progress-wise once I got myself into the right headspace to immerse myself and process the dialogue and interviews.

Setup for that takes me about 15-20 minutes of quiet thought, and at the very least a full hour of immersion, whether to speak, read, write, or listen in any language I’m studying. I should work up to an entire day of immersion when family is away for extended periods.

There’s a bit of performance anxiety in that, stemming from previous study of both Japanese and Pilipino, the former in the early 90s and the latter just before the early 2000s.

Both taught me a lot, but in both cases I was not…well…at either time, and was to my eternal regret a bit of an idiot as a student even in my late 20s.

Without getting into personal details or drama, my experiences of both left me with a difficulty in switching between English and other languages quickly or in a public context, especially for interviews or social media posting, and dreading again making an idiot of myself as a learner, this time on the Internet for all to see.

There’s also a lack of patience on my part, as I must remind myself that even in formal study it takes several whole semesters for anybody to make progress at my age in any non-native language, even with an instructor and fellow students to interact with for feedback.

Hindi, Tamil, and Bangla are not easy languages to begin with, especially for non-native speakers like me!

All of my study to-date on the current languages, ALL of it, has been informal, but still marked by progress over time, even with my biases and impatience getting in the way of seeing that.

It helps to take, even in a passing moment of introspection, and actually immersing myself in the damn languages instead of whining, a long view, to see the forests of India’s Big Three languages over time for the trees of any given study period.

Maybe I’ll always be somewhat anxious about being the village idiot of students, but maybe too I can avoid that outcome, to keep up the long game toward what level of mastery I can achieve.

At my age, I’ll probably never reach native fluency in any of them, but that’s cool. I’m not trying to pass as a native speaker anyway, not perfect fluency, only to broaden my horizons and reduce my ignorance of the rest of humanity elsewhere in some small way, however imperfectly.

And d’you know what? I think that’s good enough.

Quid Novi? | October Blogcation 2018

Hey, all! Just letting you know that next week there will be no new posts on the site, and I’ll be editing, recreating, and taking down old pages, including the Fiction Links page. Otherwise, most of next week or the next two weeks will be spent attending to study, important projects, and personal matters that need addressing as well as blog maintenance. I’ll be back onsite with new updates before the end of October. I’m making good progress in study, so I’m satisfied with that, and I hope that things are also going well for those of you who visit my little blog now and then. Several of the fiction serials on this site will be deleted, or at least taken offline indefinitely, as you can read much better, cleaner versions of them in my published e-books on Amazon.

Thanks for stopping by, and until then….

Quid Novi? | Post-Housekeeping 2018 Edition

Well, it’s largely done, the largest bit of housekeeping on this site short of deleting all content and starting fresh. I didn’t go that route, simply because I think that some of the current content is worth keeping. So what exactly went on here while the site was private-access only?

For starters, I began by Trashing obviously worthless posts, and saving as Drafts those I might like to keep, as raw material to inspire newer and better entries. Toward the end of this, there were also those entries that gave no traction to the site, and in at least a few cases, had never brought in any traffic at all since first being posted some years ago. Zero page views. I have deleted video entries that are unwatchable for a variety of reasons, including having been deleted on the hosting site, deletion of the hosting account, having embedding disabled on the same, or being blocked for country, privacy, or copyright reasons. I’ve simplified several Categories for easier search reference, and deleted at least one. Doubtless at least a couple more will follow. Even many of my oldest (and most awful) fractal entries are now defunct. Most hadn’t been viewed since posting around eight years ago. I’ve saved as drafts several Pages on the site for future use. Yesterday, I’ve updated the Theme for this site to something decent, and am hiring a professional to craft a logo for this site’s brand. There will be tentacles involved, but I’m keeping the content of this blog largely PG.

I’m rarely satisfied by whatever my level of activity is, and many of you know that already from previous posts. But concern for my health and long-term well being dictates that I work to avoid putting too many aliens in my saucer. So, from here on, I’ll moderate time over the next two months while still posting and completing my study requirements. I’m almost done with my Bengali study goals, and nearly finished with Algebra II. But I’ll blog when I can, schedule posts when I’m able, and work to keep this blog one worth visiting.

Thanks for clicking on the site, and in proper abbreviated Soruggon….
