TED – Lucianne Walkowicz: Finding planets around other stars

A nice little discussion of the techniques used by us, through the Kepler space telescope, to locate and identify exoplanets, worlds outside our own solar system that may, if conditions look favorable, bear further looking at for signs of extraterrestrial life.

It’s still a longshot of any such world having life, much less of the intelligent sort, even if the right distance from the star, and even if the space-weather conditions allow for it, but our techniques for looking are improving.

As we look at more and more exoplanets, our odds of finding suitable worlds are getting much better, and if we can avoid killing each other or losing the political will to keep funding exoplanet research, no matter what we find, I’m sure it will prove interesting indeed.
